As you begin to go for Eagle Scout, the first rank that you must achieve is Star. You will notice that the requirements for Star rank are very different from the last three ranks that you have completed. This is because you have finished most of the scout skills that you will need to know, and will begin to teach them to the newer scouts that are just joining the troop now. You will soon find yourself in a position of leadership, be it patrol leader or historian, den chief or quartermaster. Hopefully you have been to summer camp before, and have already started working toward the six merit badges required for Star. You also may have required community service for school, a great way to check off requirement 4. You are farther along on the path to Eagle than you think!

Requirements for Star:

1 Be active in your unit (and patrol if you are in one) for at least 4 months as a First Class Scout.
2 Demonstrate scout spirit by living the Scout Oath (Promise) and Scout Law in your everyday life.
3 Earn 6 merit badges, including 4 from the required list for Eagle.*
4 While a First Class Scout, take part in service project(s) totaling at least 6 hours of work. These projects must be approved by your Scoutmaster.
5 While a First Class Scout, serve actively in your unit for four months in one or more positions of responsibility (or carry out a unit-leader-assigned leadership project to help your unit):
6 Take part in a Scoutmaster conference.
7 Complete your board of review.
*Choose any of the 17 required merit badges in the 13 categories to fulfill requirement 3.
