Don't Miss the Annual Flag Ceremony

Saturday morning May 25 is the annual Flag Placement Ceremony at the Veterans Cemetery on Sepulveda Blvd just north of Wilshire.  This is an annual event.  All units of the Girl Scouts of America and the Boy Scouts of America are invited to participate in this demonstration of honor and respect for the military dead. Scouts will place flags on the over 80,000 graves at the Los Angeles National Cemetery in West LA.  The attached flyers explain the event in detail. This is not a mandatory event, but we hope for strong showing from Troop 1.  If you are planning to attend, please let me know so that we can let the organizers know our approximate number and so that we can obtain the right number of patches for the scouts participating.

Arrival time:  7:00 a.m.  (Yes, it's early, but well worth it and your son will be proud of his participation). The event will begin promptly at 8:00 and Scouts will begin placing flags shortly thereafter.  This is a formal event.  Scouts & leaders should be in full uniform (shirts tucked in, hats, kerchiefs, etc.) and scouts should be instructed about respectful behavior during the ceremony and in the cemetery (see the attached flyer).  They should be quiet and stand still during the opening ceremony.  The grass is usually wet so water resistant hiking shoes or boots are advised.  We will probably be finished by 9:30.

Directions:  Park at the Veterans Administration Facilities just west of I-405, through the tunnel on Constitution Avenue.  Take Sepulveda Blvd and turn west onto Constitution Avenue just north of Wilshire Blvd.  After parking, walk back across Sepulveda and into the cemetery.  Be ready for a big crowd!  Traffic is often congested so get up early and leave yourselves plenty of time!  Troop 1 will meet about 100 yards inside the gate to the cemetery and off to the right of the main entrance road across from the canon.

Traffic going north on Sepulveda can get backed up a long way; a faster way of getting into the tunnel is to come south on Sepulveda (for most of us, this would mean going up to Montana or Sunset and then coming south on Sepulveda.  An even better way, if you're up to navigating the Veteran's Affairs Grounds, is to enter the grounds from the West, from Bringham Avenue. This way will allow you to avoid the congestion but, if you're not familiar with the Veteran's Affairs Grounds, make sure to bring a map.

Troop 1 Wins 11 Awards at Camporee 2013

Camporee was a great success for Troop 1.  Below is the list of awards that we won:
  • 100% Boys' Life Unit 2013
  • 3rd Overall Red Lantern Patrol
  • 3rd in Knot competition
  • 3rd in First Aid
  • 3rd in Flag Pole Raising
  • 3rd in Campsite Inspection
  • 2nd in Topo Map
  • 2nd in Shelter Set up
  • 1st in Compass
  • 2 Spirit Awards for Duct Tape Patrol

Congratulations to all the Scouts that participated and all Adult Leaders. After winning one award last year and winning 11 awards this year shows how much of an improvement we have made toward Camporee. Though many of the scouts that attended were young they challenged themselves to new horizons by winning these awards and telling us that they mean business. I hope all these scouts continue on their journey to Eagle and win many more awards in the future to come.
